After you’ve done the difficult work of personal transformation and extended your reach, watch for the open door.
Looking back, isn’t it funny how when you first began to stretch your wings you felt uncomfortable about meeting strangers and going to new places? It must have felt uncomfortable to keep introducing yourself to strangers when you have been surrounded by familiar faces for so long. But, you know what? You’ve been changing; and, your new habits have ushered you to an open door.
Walk through it!
There is no time to look back to see where you have journeyed from when the door is open before you. You have only one chance to make a first impression, so be ready!
Research findings confirm that first impressions are literally formed in the blink of an eye, with additional information only confirming the initial assessment (Okten, 2018; https://www.psychologicalscience.org/observer/studying-first-impressions-what-to-consider). Within fractions of a second people decide if you are high status, trustworthy, smart, competent, attractive, sexual orientation, and more (Premack, 2018; https://www.businessinsider.com/science-of-first-impressions-2015-2).
So, what does your first impression reveal? Are you competent, attractive, trustworthy, and ready to lead? Or, are you lost, lonely, looking for a leader, and hoping that someone will rescue you?
If you have done the hard work to get here, I am sure that you prefer to be seen as the former. So, work with what you have and make the best first impression that you can. Pick your best outfit, shine your shoes, comb your hair, and practice to smile when you look the next person in the eye.
Welcome to the new you!
Don’t lose him or her. Hold your head up, lift your shoulders and walk confidently knowing that this is your season to win. Also walk knowing that someone will walk behind you. Be encouraged by Steve Green’s admonition,
“Oh may all who come behind us find us faithful
May the fire of our devotion light their way
May the footprints that we leave
Lead them to believe
And the lives we live inspire them to obey” (https://genius.com/Steve-green-find-us-faithful-lyrics).
