“Sí, sabes que ya llevo un rato mirándote
Tengo que bailar contigo hoy (DY)
Vi que tu mirada ya estaba llamándome
Muéstrame el camino que yo voy (Oh)…

Vamos a hacerlo en una playa en Puerto Rico
Hasta que las olas griten “¡ay, bendito!”
Para que mi sello se quede contigo” (Erika Ender / Luis Fonsi / Ramon Ayala, 2017).

Summer birthdays are a wonderful time to do some of those things that you have always wanted to do. One of my long time friends recently celebrated her birthday, and she wanted to go for a girls’ night out. Something we have not been able to coordinate in years for various reasons.
So, what was her desire?

So I took her to one of my favourite places for great dancing, a safe environment, and a wonderful ambience. Since she was the newbie, I had the pleasure of introducing her to some of the wonderful offerings of Kingston’s nightlife. Although, I had not been back in months, it seemed like old times as I saw familiar patrons twirling across the dance floor. It also proved to be an exceptional time for both of us.

After Salsa lessons with the wonderful instructor, Mr. Haan, we were ready for a night of dancing! And, it was soooooooooooooooooooooooooo much fun!

Dancing provides so many options for enjoying yourself and learning about new cultures. Some of my favorites are Latin dances including Salsa, Meringue, Batchanga, Kizomba, and simply rocking to the beats. Other loves include Reggae, ballet, ballroom dancing and more. The opportunities for fun are endless!
There is a dance that’s just for you! So take time to discover it. And, imagine your body irresistibly moving as the pulsing sounds of Bruno Mars accompanies you, singing,

“Cool jewelry shining so bright
Strawberry champagne on ice
Lucky for you, that’s what I like, that’s what I like
Lucky for you, that’s what I like, that’s what I like
Sex by the fire at night
Silk sheets and diamonds all white
Lucky for you, that’s what I like, that’s what I like
Lucky for you, that’s what I like, that’s what I like” (Christopher Steven Brown / Peter Gene Hernandez / Jeremy Reeves / Jonathan Yip / James Edward Fauntleroy / Philip Lawrence / Ray Charles Mccullough / Ray Romulus, 2017).

Beyond joining a ballroom, a dance studio, or some other dance society, dancing can be enjoyed as an observer. Summer is a great time for concerts, and many dance schools host camps and concert series which provide family fun at affordable prices. Some of the venues provide great ambience also for relaxing or dressing up for the evening. So, find your pleasure and jump right in!

No matter if you are on the dance floor, sitting off to the side, or watching from prized theatre seats, the pulse of the rhythms are captivating. You are bound to catch the rhythm and learn a few new moves as your body rocks to the beats of those magical tones.

Remember to be deliberate about your Summer fun. Find a way to recreate while helping your body to be lithe/supple/flexible/healthy and strong.

A celebration of the bounty of nature is the next project on the table. Until it bears fruit, please enjoy what is already available at Teachers preparing to go back to school in a few months should check out For a Teacher’s Heart which was released recently.
